What is the Owner Builder Course?

The 10274NAT Course in Preparation for Owner Builder Permit (“Owner Builder Course”) is the mandatory course that all individuals must complete prior to being eligible to apply for a QLD Owner Builder Permit (unless an exemption applies).

In addition to the Owner Builder Course, you will also need to complete a White Card Course (known as the unit CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry), and this is a very basic safety course for all individuals who carry out work in the construction industry. Every owner builder in QLD must also hold a White Card.

If you already hold a White Card that has been issued:

less than 2 years ago, you will be able to commence our Owner Builder Course without again having to complete the White Card Course
more than 2 years ago, and you have not been working in the construction industry, you will need to register and complete our current White Card Course.

If you do not currently hold a White Card, you will need to complete our White Card Course as well our online Owner Builder Course.

The Owner Builder Course itself consists of three main topics:

Intro to Owner Building (including general Statutory Requirements)
Drawings and Estimating
Managing the Work

Applying for an Owner Builder Permit
After you have finished our Owner Builder Course, you will need to apply to the QLD Building and Construction Commission for an Owner Builder Permit. In addition to the application form, you will also need to present copies of any certificates we issue you.
